How to Curate a Collection

One of my favorite aspects of designing and working in a creative field is determining the direction of the piece or the collection. I love curating. I've been an active user of Pinterest and Tumblr for ages just because I find it fun! So let's talk about curated collections.

A curated collection can be anything: a Pinterest board, a mood board (physical or digital), a collage, a new swimwear collection, a photo gallery on a wall, an Instagram account, an interior design board for a room makeover, a stack of books, anything that needs to be cohesive, have direction, and inspire a feeling.

It can seem overwhelming when you first start out. Everything is gorgeous! All the colors rock! This vibe makes you feel just as much as that vibe! Slowww down.

My first tip is to start either with a color, or a texture, or a single photo. Think about what's been sticking in your mind lately. Do you keep buying things in the same color blue? What's similar about the last 20 pictures you liked in Instagram? What location are you obsessed with vacationing next? Look at your recent clothing purchases, is there a trend you can identify?

Once you've picked something, start gathering everything that either has similar colors, or makes you feel the same way. We're talking about intuition and gut feeling.

I loved this photo (right) as soon as I saw it, and knew that was the direction I wanted to take my next collection of swimwear. But how do you get from one photo to a collection of bikinis?

Like likes like. I started paying attention to things that felt similar and realized I was dreaming of a French getaway that was more rustic than chic. Here's what else felt right.

I was obsessed with Jamie Beck's Ann Street Studio Instagram account documenting her artistic exploration in France. I had just finished reading Driving Over Lemons, a story based in Andalusia. And neutral colors were calling out to me, especially that dusty rose color and a sagey green. So I started browsing Spoonflower for swatches that felt the way these images made me feel and found the perfect Orange Blossom print. From there I created a few custom colors, fell in love with a muted floral pattern, and picked up some more black fabric that just fit. Here's what resulted:

This method can be applied to all kinds of curating. Let's review.

1. Pick a color, or one central image.
2. Gather everything that feels or looks similar.
3. Begin to pair things off or group them, identify uniting themes.
4. Remove ruthlessly anything that doesn't fit.
5. Take the next step with your project!

It's that simple, and I wish you luck with your next curation project! Share them with me here or on Instagram!

Ps. Shop the new collection colors by shopping on Etsy or send me a DM on Instagram.

Gift Guide for The Beach Babe

I've been seeing a lot of gift guides, unfortunately so many of them showcase ridiculously expensive and outrageous items. The Conde Nast Traveler I just got had items in their gift guides over $100,000. I don't know about all of you, but that is nonsense. So here I present to you a very reasonable gift guide for the beach-loving gals in your life! Tell me below, what's on your wishlist?? Ps. You might see something new here... :)

To Look Cute on a Road Trip...

There's time for at least one more decent road trip this summer, and you better take advantage of it! So far, we're having a really nice Indian Summer and I'm craving a good, solid road trip before we bounce along with the leaves from September to October. I always find it difficult to pack for road trips as your primary concern when sitting in a car for 8-12 hours is comfort. But you and I love clothes and sometimes it's hard to pack some cute things without packing all your cute things, know what I mean? My suitcase is always 50% too full. The best tip I can give - mix & match. Find a color palette you love and work inside of it. A few fun things here and there are ok, but don't force yourself into overpacking by packing difficult to match items. I chose a blue/grey palette and mixed in a few fun items. What do you think? What are your must-haves for road trips? Have you taken or are you going on one this summer? Tell me!

Bottoms. I like soft and stretchy bottoms for riding in the car and these floral ones are too cute. One pair of jeans and 1-2 pairs of jean shorts are a must, but never wear jean shorts in the car.... ouch! I like these Lorna Jane gym shorts. They could be paired with any kind of top for a casual sight-seeing day, a hike, or a quick workout to stretch your legs before getting back in the car. Shop these items here.

Tops. Temperature regulation, and subsequently layering, is critical. Whether you're freezing your ass off in the car while your partner is sweating his off, or a restaurant is cold, or it's actually rainy and cool on your hike, not hot and humid, layers will keep you comfy. These are all pretty much mix and match options with the bottoms - the best way to pack. Shop these easy breezy pieces here

Shoes. Let me tell you something sad and heartbreaking. You only need three pairs of shoes on your average road trip or weekend trip. I know, I know, it's hard not to bring every option. But you only need one pair of sneakers, one cute/casual pair for walking/shopping, and one pair of sturdy, neutral sandals. The exceptions: if you're planning on intense hiking which would require hiking boots, or if you'll be using campground or outdoor showers, which necessitate the $2 Wal-Mart sandals. Nothing more! Besides, it leaves more room for souvenirs. These cute options can be shopped here.

Bags. Again, let's exercise restraint. Besides the bag you'll pack your clothes and toiletries in, you need a large tote for the car and beach/park/shopping, a cute bag for everyday, and possibly a sport pack with a hydration component (although this depends on your travels). If you have a nice camera, use your camera bag as you normally would! Shop these babes here

Accessories. Yes! You need some accessories! A good hat and a good pair of sunglasses cannot be forgotten! New wanderlusty books are important for boring stretches of road, down time, etc. You cannot take a road trip without a camera and I'm kind of obsessing over the idea of instant photos. It would be so fun and easy to make a photo collection with an Instax or Polaroid! Yes, bring jewelry and a neutral belt! This beaded belt reminds me of all the road trips I took out west with my family as a child. Fun fact, these gorgeous bracelets and necklaces are made by craftsman across the world as part of a fair trade partnership. Buying these items directly helps entrepreneurs in impoverished areas

Ps. Don't forget: pack extra undies and socks, a swimsuit, sunscreen (even in the car!), and snacks!

Summer Trends

Summer ain't too far away, and honestly what's more fun about summer than swapping out your wardrobe and clothes, and doing a little shopping to fill in?

Here are three trends I'm absolutely loving for summer! Click the photo to purchase, and in some cases, see more color options! :)

Easy Breezy One Piece Items

Rompers and dresses in light gauzy cottons, with sexy accents like plunging necklines and exposed shoulders are so cool right now. Could it get any easier or more comfortable to be stylish? I don't think so. To me, the rompers with long sleeves or long legs are easier to wear than the ones with both short shorts and no sleeves.

Graphic and Text Tees

Tshirts with clever words and pretty images are a fun way to appear stylish while maintaining absolute comfort (my favorite thing ever). As a jeans and tee kind of girl, this really appeals to me. I love the idea of throwing a structured blazer or leather jacket over a tee like these and mixing up my shoe options. You can make the look rocker, boho, chic, sporty.... Love.

Sexy Fringed Heels

I'm totally obsessed with this look and am thinking of ways I can possibly diy some fringe to add to a pair of simple sandals I already have. Also, desperately needing a place to wear such a cute look! I think fringed sandals can be worn just about the same way that plain sandals can be - skirts, dresses, slacks, skinny jeans. But, they'll make you feel like the dancing girl emoji, and what's not to love about that?

What are your thoughts? How would you style these trends?

Coachella Style

Festival season is coming up fast, and the big one, Coachella, is right around the corner! Have you gotten your outfit? You know it's not just about the music, whether you like it or not, going to Coachella is a chance to show off your taste in boho fashion. So I've picked a few items to help you get in the boho festival spirit, whether you're making an appearance at Coachella, or hitting up your small town's yearly hullabaloo. Click the sets below to shop the items!

What's your favorite look? What festivals are you going to this summer? Let's chat!

Trend Alert: Embellished Bikinis

I've been seeing it more and more, embellishments on bikinis is coming in red hot!

It's not really a new thing, as I remember seeing bikinis with smatterings of crystals early in my teens, but todays embellishments are wild and exotic and rich and thoughtfully executed.

Take a look at these super gorgeous embellished bikinis, and tell me what you think! Would you wear em?

Right: This bikini by Chio features some delicate orange beading with pink and yellow pom poms on the top and bottom. If this won't make you shake your booty, nothing probably will :)

Below: This top with matching bottoms from Beach Riot is as ritzy as you could hope from a bikini named "cash".

Right: Most of Camilla's swimsuits have embellishment on them, and the prints are so unique. This is one of my faves.

Below: The Mar de Huichol features a v-shaped beaded panel on the front and beaded medallions on the sides of the bottoms. Too cool.

Left: Chio also makes a blue triangle bikini featuring tassels on the top and bottom. I just love this one!

Above: Beach Riot's baby blue, gold beaded one piece is so Palm Beach perfect.

Below: This Agua Bendito bikini features delicate beading and tiny tassels on the top.

Left: Agua Bendita's rocker inspired one piece is just too cool. The fabric has almost a leather like texture and the embellishments run down the side.

So, what do you think? Are you for the embellished look or against it? Is it practical? I'd be a little worried about something working it's way loose, since I'm a little more active in my swimsuits, but I really love the blue Chio bikini. Tell me your thoughts below or on Facebook!
