Runaway x Maderas Beach Co

Back in Spring, I met with Gabe, the genius behind Runaway Brand, to discuss some ideas he had for custom swimwear for his brand. He has a small store in downtown Durham and has a cult-like following of Durhamites who love his witty and weird designs.

We chatted for a bit about what I do and what he was thinking. When I asked how many pieces he was thinking, he said 60-100. My jaw dropped. Needless to say, that's my biggest order ever. We settled on 46 because of the timing. We wanted them out by early June and I would be gone 3 weeks in May. I think I ended up with 29 days to complete all the suits.

My mom had to come down and help. Thanks mom!

Gabe designed a cool floral print in two colors and a logo print with his rabbit logo, and I designed 3 complementary solids. We used the Capri style and the Marianne style bikinis, and I designed a new one-piece, called the Palermo.

The Capri is the one we all love. Fixed triangle top. Skinny side bottoms with contrasting sides.

The Marianne is a midi top, not bandeau, not high neck. I love it. It laces up in the back. The bottoms also feature lacing on the sides.

The Palermo has a scoop neck, and low back with lace up straps. It's the best one-piece ever. Hands down.

The swimsuits are gorgeous and fit beautifully with the rest of their 2018 summer collection, which has the theme, "Endless Bummer". The lookbook is available here and you can shop the bikinis here

A Sexy Bikini for a Trip to Jamaica

My good friend, Crystal, came to me with a strong idea of the type of swimsuit she was looking for, and I was very excited to make her something unique and sexy. Crystal is a cool girl with a rock n roll meets southern belle vibe, and she's got a hot bod.

Crystal wanted a high neck black bikini with a fun print on the reverse. We toiled a little bit over finding the right print, but as soon as I saw it, I knew she would love it. -->

She wanted it to fit like a glove. Hidden elastic in the top and bottom make this reversible, seamless-style bikini comfy and ultra flattering, not to mention secure enough to enjoy some body surfing or snorkeling.

Thanks for the opportunity to make a gorgeous suit, Crystal! Can't wait to make some sexy ones for us both for St. Martin! <3

A Custom Bikini for a Cool yoga-loving Chica

Recently Katy came to me looking for a handmade swimsuit. She had some ideas in mind - small and cheeky but supportive enough to get bendy while doing yoga. She pinned some photos of suits she liked on Pinterest and we talked about colors. Many of the suits she liked were fixed triangles and had black straps or edging. We found some really cool prints from FunkiFabrics, a UK supplier, and I kept my final design pretty much secret until she received her suit. And her praise was the greatest reward!

Here is the result and her verdict on this pretty number!

The top and bottom on both sides feature pieced prints, and the bottoms feature an asymmetrical front. The ties are a little thicker, made of the softest black fabric, and super comfy. The back ties on the top offer numerous tying options, as Katy mentioned she was interested in unique cutouts and straps. These are quite cheeky but feature elastic throughout which keeps them firmly in place without pinching.

In Katy's words "Oh my goodness, Rebecca!!! You have certainly outdone yourself! I just got the gorgeous bikini in the mail last night!! And it far exceeded any idea that I had for the suit! You are outstanding!!"

Making me blush :)
